Chapter 12

A short walk through the village with Wiggles still in my arms found me standing outside Angel Force. The usually pristine white walls were covered in smears of dirt, and graffiti covered one wall.

Three angels almost slammed into me as they hurried through the doors.

“Where’s the fire?” I spotted Dominic among them.

“Over in the forest,” he said.

“I was joking.” I took a step closer to him. “There’s really a fire?”

“It’s only small, but we need to put it out before it gets out of hand.”

“Make sure Fallon knows,” I said. “She’ll help you out.”

He waved as he raced after his colleagues, and the three of them took to the sky on their giant white wings.

I entered the reception lobby and discovered it buzzing with activity.

Dazielle stood behind the desk, a line of concentration between her eyebrows. The stern expression on her face only deepened when she spotted me. “What are you doing here?”

“I’m here to convince you that Mack and Coleman are innocent.”

“I know. Well, they’re innocent of murder.”

“You finally agree with me that they didn’t kill Bathsheba?” This could be easier than I’d anticipated.

Dazielle’s tongue poked out from between her teeth before she nodded. “I do.”

“Can I speak to them and see if they have useful information about the actual killer?”

“Not a chance,” Dazielle said. “They’re not getting out of here. I haven’t made the charges formal yet, but they had the jewels on them and have been identified by the family as the individuals who stole from the tent. They’ll serve time for what they did.”

“What made you change your mind about them?”

Dazielle huffed out a breath. “I bet you’re loving this.”

“Maybe just a tiny bit.” I tried not to smile too broadly. “I did suggest that they weren’t powerful enough to have killed Bathsheba after I’d caught them.”

“With my help,” Wiggles said.

“Of course, always with your help. We couldn’t have done it without you,” I said.

“I’m sure we would have managed without either of you interfering,” Dazielle said.

“Go on. What changed your mind?” I set Wiggles down on the floor.

Dazielle checked some paperwork and handed it to a passing angel. “I had their magic tested. Neither of them was powerful enough to produce a lethal magic bolt spell.”

“Which is something I may have mentioned.” This time, I allowed the smugness to seep through.

“Yes, you’re the clever one.” Dazielle’s wings fluttered around her.

“So, what’s next?”

“In reference to...”

“In reference to you finding the actual killer? I’ve got a few ideas if you want to hear them.”

“I really don’t,” Dazielle said. “Mack and Coleman are talking, and we’re getting useful information. Initially, they panicked and pointed the finger at each other. Mack said that Coleman fired the spell, and he said the exact same thing about Mack.”

“So, you thought you had the case wrapped up?”

She nodded. “I figured it was only a matter of time before one of them broke, but it didn’t happen. After we tested them, we realized neither of them could have cast that spell. They both lied.
